The district is situated in the north-east of Rajasthan. It is bounded on the north and north-east by Gurgaon (of Haryana) and Bharatpur district and on the north-west by Mahendragarh district of Haryana, on the south-west by Jaipur and on the south by Sawai- Madhopur and Jaipur districts. The district is spread across 8380 sq km area. It is surrounded by the Aravali hills from all sides which protect it from the sandy and hot winds coming from the Thar Desert. River Ruparail is the major river of the district because of which there is an extensive range of flora and fauna available in the region. The Alwar tehsil has a total population of 703856. Alwar district has an average elevation of 271 m (889 ft). It is fairly rich in mineral wealth; it produces marble, granite, feldspar, dolomite, quartz, lime stone, soap stone, barites, copper clay, copper ore and pyrophylite.
Alwar is a popular tourist attraction located in the foothills of the Aravallis. Alwar celebrates a number of festivals. These festivals are also very popular among the tourists. The most popular festival of Alwar is the Alwar Festival. A great procession through the streets marks the opening of this festival. Another tourist attraction in Alwar district is Sariska National park which is a witness to the variety of wildlife of this region.
